Each day of Navratri is devoted to one form of Goddess Durga, and Chaturthi is dedicated to Maa Kushmanda, also known as Ashtabhuja Devi for her eight hands. The name Kushmanda comes from three Sanskrit words: ku (small), ushma (energy), and anda (cosmic egg). With her radiant smile, she is said to have created the universe, filling it with light and energy.

Maa Kushmanda rides a lioness and holds a lotus, bow, arrow, and kamandal in her right hands, while in her left hands she carries a chakra, gada, japa mala, and an amrit kalash. She rules over the Anahata Chakra (Heart Chakra) and is believed to remove depression, fear, and negative thoughts from devotees’ lives.
