Hotels in Prayagraj saw a sharp decline in bookings following the stampede at the Maha Kumbh but owners are hopeful of a surge after the Basant Panchami 'snan'.

Hoteliers are sending out the message, sometimes even personally reaching out to potential guests, that the situation is now "normal" for a visit to the Maha Kumbh after the final Amrit Snan on Basant Panchami on Monday when the crowd is expected to ease out.

Sardar Harjeet Singh, president of the Prayagraj Hotel and Restaurant Welfare Association, said, “After the January 29 incident, bookings dropped drastically as many visitors could not reach their hotels. However, the situation is now normal, and we are appealing to devotees to come after the Basant Panchami 'snan' so that they do not face any difficulties.” At least 30 people were killed and 60 injured at a pre-dawn stampede on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya, the most auspicious day of the Kumbh Mela, on January 29.

Singh added that several pilgrims were stopped at the city's borders from January 28 onwards till January 30 and they were unable to come to the hotels. After news of the stampede spread, people began cancelling their reservations.
