This auspicious vrat (fast) is dedicated to praying for the long life, health, and prosperity of one’s husband. Falling on the Krishna Paksha Chaturthi of Kartik month, Karwa Chauth is celebrated with devotion, fasting, and beautiful rituals across North India.

Women begin the day with Sargi, a pre-dawn meal given by mothers-in-law, and end their fast only after sighting the moon and performing Karwa Chauth Puja Vidhi. The festival not only strengthens marital bonds but also reflects faith, endurance, and devotion.

Significance of Karwa Chauth

The term Karwa Chauth, also known as Karak Chaturthi, is derived from Karwa (a small earthen pot) used during the puja to offer water (Arghya) to the moon. This festival holds deep emotional and spiritual meaning for married women, symbolizing love, dedication, and sacrifice.

Traditionally, women observe a nirjala fast—without food or water—from sunrise to moonrise, seeking blessings for their husband’s long life. The festival also coincides with Sankashti Chaturthi, which is dedicated to Lord Ganesha. During the puja, Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, Lord Ganesha, and Lord Kartikeya are worshipped.
