Significance of Jyeshtha Gauri Avahana
Jyeshtha Gauri Avahana is deeply revered in the Hindu religion, especially among the Marathi women who observe this festival with immense devotion. The rituals begin with the arrival of the Gauri idol, followed by fasting and prayers. The fast is observed under the Anuradha Nakshatra, which falls on September 10 in 2024.

The festival is a symbol of marital harmony and prosperity. Married women pray for the well-being of their husbands, while unmarried women seek blessings for a good match. The festival extends over three days, beginning with the bringing of the Gauri idol into homes, followed by the main puja on the second day, and concluding with the immersion of the idol on the third day.

Puja Rituals for Jyeshtha Gauri 2024


  1. Preparation: Women wake up early, bathe, and get ready in traditional attire. The house is thoroughly cleaned, decorated with flowers and mango leaves, and adorned with rangoli and footprints of Goddess Gauri at the entrance.

  2. Bringing the Idol: The male members of the family bring the idol of Goddess Gauri home. The idol is placed on a wooden plank, alongside a kalash filled with water and a coconut placed on top. The idol is then decorated with ornaments and traditional items of shringar.

  3. Puja: Women offer prayers to Goddess Gauri, presenting bhog prasad, seasonal fruits, and other offerings. Green bangles and sarees are worn as these are considered highly auspicious in Marathi tradition.

  4. Visarjan: On the third day, the idol of Goddess Gauri is taken for immersion in a nearby water body, symbolising her return to Kailash Parbat.
