India among few to retain the PM, as power changed hands in most countries in 2024

US elections have witnessed another toss-up with Republican nominee and former president Donald Trump coming to power for a second term

India is one of few economies where incumbent has won an election

Half of the global population was expected to vote as 70 elections across 40 countries were scheduled for 2024. A Moneycontrol analysis shows that, barring a few major economies like India, most have seen a change in leadership in the polls conducted until November 6.

The latest toss-up coming from the US, where former president Donald Trump won a second term in office, defeating the Democratic Party candidate and current vice-president Kamala Harris, in what many perceived would be a nail-biting contest.

While India re-elected Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the prime minister for a third straight term in May, and Pakistan saw incumbent Shehbaz Sharif winning the mandate, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Bhutan witnessed a change in leadership this year.
