Will 2011 mark year of global volatility in food prices?

Though, India’s food inflation is more a local demand-supply problem, it cannot be fully divorced from the global picture. Abdolrezan Abbassian, FAO Secretary of the Inter-Governmental Group on Grains discusses how negative global newsflow is adding to food price woes.

After eight months of rising continuously the FAO food price index dropped in the month of March in this year down 2.9% from its peak in February but still almost 40% higher than prices in March last year. The FAO or the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the UN, runs a monthly price index.
