One such employee, whose identity remains anonymous for job protection, has managed to navigate the system to embark on a month-long vacation in Italy while maintaining the illusion of full-time work.
This employee shared their experience in an essay with Business Insider, shedding light on the phenomenon of "quiet vacationing."
"I consider myself to be a motivated person, but at my current job, I don't have to work hard to get the tasks done," the employee began. A social science graduate working for a San Francisco tech company, they are based in Europe and primarily work from home.
The job, which involves managing a database, is described as simple and repetitive, often leaving the employee with ample free time.
Despite the company's introduction of a return-to-office policy, the employee expressed frustration and resentment towards the expectation. This discontent fuelled a shift towards "quiet quitting," where they started doing the bare minimum to complete tasks.
Eventually, they evolved into "quiet vacationing," a practice where they appeared to be working while actually taking time off.
The employee detailed how this covert operation began modestly, with short breaks and occasional spa days, but eventually culminated in a daring month-long trip to Italy.
"I spent a month in Italy but only used a week of PTO," they confessed. By strategically logging on in the mornings, checking emails, and planning their day around meetings, they maintained the façade of productivity.
A mouse jiggler, a device that mimics computer activity, was instrumental in creating the illusion of presence on the company's internal communication platform.
During their Italian escapade, the employee relished the freedom to explore, enjoy local cuisine, and immerse themselves in cultural experiences, all while keeping up appearances at work.
They emphasised the simplicity of the deception, noting that colleagues were none the wiser, often praising their performance during appraisals.
The employee's criticised the lack of genuine concern for employees' well-being and the archaic nature of the traditional 9-to-5 work model. "Rigid expectations around work are archaic," they stated. "I could do my job 24 hours a day from anywhere in the world. Why are we having regulations about the hours that I'm online or where I'm working from?"
This sentiment is echoed in their views on the broader employment landscape, where mass layoffs and inadequate compensation have led to a growing trend of quiet quitting and quiet vacationing. "People are finally giving companies exactly what they give us — nothing," the employee remarked.
While the potential consequences of being caught loom in the background, the employee remains unperturbed. They say they are confident in their ability to perform their job and see any potential fallout as a possible catalyst for a much-needed career change.
