Eating at a street food stall in Uttar Pradesh turned into a shocking medical emergency when a woman dislocated her jaw while eating a golgappa. The incident happened in Auraiya and was captured on video. The now-viral video has sparked alarm among pani-puri and golgappa lovers across the country.
Inkila Devi, a resident of Auraiya, was returning from a local clinic with a family member when they decided to stop at a roadside stall for golgappas. What began as a simple craving quickly escalated into a crisis. As soon as she tried to bite into a particularly large golgappa, her lower jawbone slipped out of its normal position, leaving her mouth stuck open, The Times of India reported.
Family members rushed her back to the clinic, where doctors provided first aid but soon realised the severity of the dislocation. The jaw could not be realigned with basic measures, prompting an urgent referral to a higher medical facility for specialised care.
"The unusual severity made it impossible to close her mouth fully, raising concerns about nerve or tissue damage," a medical source said.
Understanding the condition
Experts explained that jaw dislocation, medically termed mandibular dislocation, occurs when the lower jawbone moves out of its normal position at the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). This joint enables smooth movement for chewing and speaking. Dislocations can happen due to trauma, excessive mouth opening, or sudden force—such as biting into a large food item.
"Jaw dislocations are rare but extremely painful. Immediate intervention is crucial to prevent long-term complications," doctors noted. Treatment typically involves manual repositioning under sedation, and severe cases may require imaging or surgical care.
"Street food is a joy, but moderation matters. Avoid biting into portions that strain the jaw," a dental specialist warned.
