It is customary for tourists in many countries to pick rocks from the beaches they visit, either to take them home to include them in their personal collection or just to look at them and admire as and when they get some time.
However, tourists might be forced to rethink their decision to pick rocks from beaches while visiting Lanzarote and Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands after authorities imposed a fine, ranging from rom 128 pounds (Rs 13,478) to 2,563 pounds (Rs 2.69 lakh) for picking sand, rocks and stones from the beaches, a Birmingham Live report said.
Officials said that Lanzarote loses tonnes of volcanic material from its beaches each year while Fuerteventura's "Popcorn Beach" loses an incredible amount of sand each year, as well.
The decision to impose fines on tourists comes after Canary Island witnessed a large inflow of tourists, in recent times. Spanish island Tenerife recently announced a water emergency because of severe drought conditions, with authorities blaming the tourists inflow for the reduction in resources.
Officials also faced a roadblock since most of the seized materials at the Lanzarote and Fuerteventura Airports cannot lead to offenders getting punished. A key factor is due to the hardships faced in providing evidence whether sand, stones and rocks have been removed from the protected areas.
