A conversation between Perplexity AI's Indian-origin CEO Aravind Srinivas and award-winning filmmaker Shekhar Kapur over the making of Mahabharata using artificial intelligence has sparked interest and curiosity among social media users.
It began when Srinivas took to X on Tuesday and wrote, "What would it take to produce a really good Mahabharata with the help of today’s AI? What do you think should be the budget and who should direct it?"
Responding to it, Kapur, who has directed intricate and critically acclaimed period pieces such as Elizabeth and Elizabeth: The Golden Age starring Cate Blanchett, said, "Mahabharat should be a platform that supports multiple story telling... it’s the closest to Quantum storytelling... characters evolve out of characters... let’s chat."
Although the duo did not specify how they would like to retell the epic, their exchange gathered close to 13,000 views in hours. An X user wrote, "Director is ready. Fortunately, no character is needed. No star fee. Hope we get to see a trailer soon." Another commented, "Great idea. Never thought of something like this. Yes, it should be multiverse of stories!"
Meanwhile, other users also recommended Srinivas approach filmmakers, including SS Rajamouli of Baahubali and RRR fame, The Lord of the Rings' fame Peter Jackson, Christopher Nolan of Inception, and even Avatar maker James Cameron.
"At this moment there is only SS Rajamouli that's shown the gumption to showcase such stories at the scale it should be made. You need a 10 season Game of Thrones level production of say 1 hour episodes each, with say, 10 episodes every season to even remotely capture the grandeur of the story. Honestly wouldn't mind even a Peter Jackson directing something like this," commented an X user. "James Cameron or Christopher Nolan. Between Christopher Nolan and James Cameron, it is Christopher Nolan who has been more notably connected to the Bhagavad Gita—particularly in the philosophical themes of his films," added another.
