Cillian Murphy bagged the Oscar in the "Best Actor" category for his performance in the Christopher Nolan-directorial "Oppenheimer" at the 96th edition of the Academy Awards held at Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, United States on Sunday.
Murphy beat competition from Paul Giamatti who was nominated for "The Holdovers", Bradley Cooper, who received a nomination for "Maestro" among others to win the prestigious award.
Murphy won the Oscar after being nominated for the first time at the Academy Awards and and his third recognition during the ongoing awards season. Murphy had won the BAFTA in the “Best Actor” category for his performance in “Oppenheimer” and also won the Golden Globe award in the "Best Male Actor – Motion Picture – Drama" category in January.
“We made a film about the man who created the atomic bomb and for better or worse we’re now living in Oppenheimer’s world now. So I’d like to dedicate this to the peacemakers everywhere," Murphy said after winning the Oscar on Sunday.
The actor also thanked director Nolan and producer Emma Thomas and the rest of the team behind the making of "Oppenheimer" and ended his speech by saying he was a "very very proud Irishman".
Starring the Irishman in the titular role, "Oppenheimer" depicts the life of the "father of the atomic bomb". The movie released on the same weekend as Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" in July last year.
Nolan bagged his first Oscar at the Academy Awards in the Best Director category.
