A woman in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur district was reportedly given divorce by her husband over a video call after he saw that she had got her eyebrows shaped without his consent. The man allegedly uttered the word “talaq (divorce)” thrice over the call from Saudi Arabia. A case has been registered under the Muslim Marriage Act, India Today reported.
The practice of instant divorce through "triple talaq" is illegal and is a punishable offence in India under the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act 2019.
The couple was married since January 2022 and the husband, Salim, is working in Saudi Arabia.
While the alleged incident took place in the first week of October, it came to light recently after the woman, Gulsaba, approached the police. According to her complaint, the man had video-called her on October 4, during which he noticed that she had got her eyebrows shaped. He questioned her about it and got angry when she told him that she did it since he was not happy with the natural shape of her eyebrows.
"You went ahead and shaped your eyebrows despite my objections. From today, I free you from this marriage," Salim told Gulsaba who recounted in her complaint what the husband told her, according to the India Today report. He then allegedly uttered the word “talaq” thrice, disconnected the call and did not respond to her.
Based on the woman’s complaint, the police has registered an FIR (first information report) against her husband, mother-in-law and three others.
