Explained: Here’s how the Chief Justice of India is appointed

Justice Nuthalapati Venkata Ramana will take over as the 48th Chief Justice of India (CJI) on April 24 succeeding Justice SA Bobde, who is due to retire on April 23. A notification to this effect was issued by the Department of Justice, Union  Ministry of Law and Justice on April 6.

The announcement

statement issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice on April 6 announced that the President of India, in exercise of the powers conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, appointed Justice Ramana to be the Chief Justice of India.
