Brazilian influencer Ravena Hanniely is set to spend over $19,000 (over Rs 16 lakh) on a hymenoplasty — a surgical procedure to repair the hymen — in her quest to "become a virgin again." The 23-year-old, who boasts more than 2.66 lakh Instagram followers, views the operation as a step in reclaiming her self-esteem and redefining her personal and professional life.
“The procedure holds a special meaning for me,” Hanniely told Jam Press, explaining her decision to undergo the controversial surgery. “I want to become a virgin again. This is for my self-esteem and personal reasons that have always been important to me.”
Hymenoplasty, also known as hymen repair surgery, involves stitching the torn edges of the hymen with dissolvable sutures to mimic its pre-torn state. Hanniely sees the surgery as symbolic, claiming it represents a “fresh start.”
While her reasons are personal, she acknowledges the intense scrutiny such procedures attract. “Unfortunately, not everyone can understand or support such intimate choices,” she said. “We need to stop judging and start respecting these decisions.”
While Hanniely remains optimistic about her decision, medical professionals have raised concerns. Dr. Hana Salusollia, CEO of London-based Medisonal Clinic, warned of the potential risks and ethical complexities surrounding hymenoplasty.
“While the procedure is a recognised cosmetic surgery, it’s largely symbolic and doesn’t actually restore someone’s virginity,” Dr. Salusollia told the New York Post. She cautioned that the surgery could lead to complications such as infection, scarring, and irregular healing, along with possible dissatisfaction with the results.
Beyond the physical risks, Dr. Salusollia emphasised the cultural and psychological implications. “It also raises huge ethical questions. Patients should be empowered to make their own ethical choices rather than feeling pressured by societal norms,” she stated. “Informed consent is critical as these decisions intersect with deeply personal and cultural dimensions.”
Hanniely, who has yet to finalise the date of her surgery, remains committed to her choice. She plans to follow strict post-operative guidelines, including avoiding physical exertion, abstaining from intimacy for a medically recommended period, and prioritising comfort to ensure proper healing.
“This is about how a woman feels and what she wants for herself,” Hanniely added, stressing the psychological benefits she associates with the procedure.
