Google Celebrates 25th Birthday: Google is celebrating its 25th birthday today as the tech giant took a walk down memory lane, reflecting on how Sergey Brin and Larry (Lawrence) Page founded the iconic company in September 1998. Google CEO Sundar Pichai shared the Doodle, thanking users of the company's products.
"Happy 25th birthday @Google! Thanks to everyone who uses our products and challenges us to keep innovating and to all Googlers!" Pichai wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Brin and Larry met as doctoral students in Stanford University’s computer science program in the late ‘90s.
Initially called BackRub, the startup grew into one of the world's most valuable and influential companies, Google. Today, Brin and Page are among the richest people in the world, and Google’s products are used by billions around the world.
"We chose our system name, Google, because it is a common spelling of googol, or 10100 and fits well with our goal of building very large-scale search engines,” Brin and Page had written.
Today's Google Doodle features the logo of the company, “Google”, with the two Os breaking into 25. A special celebratory Doodle has been produced for Google’s birthday every year.
Google’s first office was a rented garage when Sergey Brin and Larry Page moved their operations out of their dorm.
Google remains a near indispensable part of the average internet user today, with the company’s name having entered the popular lexicon over the years. It was officially added as a verb to the Merriam-Webster dictionary in 2006, which defined it as "to use the Google search engine to obtain information on the World Wide Web".
Google offers search in more than 150 languages and over 190 countries.
Google and its parent company, Alphabet, are currently headed by Indian-origin Sundar Pichai who joined the company in 2004. He took over as the chief executive officer (CEO) in 2015.
