Annually, India observes Gandhi Jayanti on October 2 and it is a day on which alcohol sale across the country is prohibited. However, the rule, it seems, is applicable only to humans after a monkey was spotted in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh holding a bottle of alcohol and trying to open to have a sip.
In a video released on X (formerly Twitter), the monkey could be seen seated on a bike that was parked outside a police commissioner's office in the city.
Anand Prakash Tiwari, a senior officer with Kanpur Police, later said that the officials did not know about the video of the monkey holding the bottle that had been circulating on social media and an investigation would be done to find out who the bike belonged to.
He further said that efforts had been put in the past to remove monkeys, from in and around the area.
This is not the first instance in which monkeys have been caught on camera, involved in an unusual activity.
Recently, a grey langur was spotted using a computer in the office of a railway official in West Bengal. In the video, officers could be heard laughing among themselves.
Dry day is observed on Gandhi Jayanti since it is believed that Mahatma Gandhi was against alcohol consumption.
