The Shah Rukh Khan starrer Jawan is registering new highs at the box office and has made records every day since its release on the big screen on September 7.
So far, the film has made four box office records in four days of its release with the latest being the fastest Hindi film to collect Rs 500 crore globally.
In the home market (India), Jawan has collected Rs 340 crore from all languages and Rs 180 crore has come from overseas markets, said Girish Johar, producer and film business expert. The film's total business currently stands at around Rs 520 crore.
Record business
He said that Jawan has also emerged as the fastest film to collect Rs 200 crore. The film earned Rs 200 crore in three days whereas Pathaan, the biggest film of 2023 entered the Rs 200 crore club in four days. Sunny Deol starrer Gadar 2 was able to earn Rs 200 crore in five days while another blockbuster and also the fourth highest-grossing Indian film KGF: Chapter 2 did so in five days.
Jawan has also become the fastest film to collect Rs 250 crore in four days at the box office.
The film also recorded the highest single-day business on the third of its release. The film collected a big total of over Rs 80 crore on its first Sunday, making it the highest single-day business for a Hindi film. When compared to films across industries, Jawan stands fourth. The record of highest single-day business is held by the Telugu film RRR with collection to the tune of Rs 102 crore.
Jawan has also emerged as the second biggest film globally, behind the Hollywood horror flick The Nun 2. "I was expecting Jawan to be the number one globally but The Nun 2 did exceptionally well in Brazil and other markets," Johar noted.
No G20 restriction impact
Despite some cinemas remaining closed for the G20 Summit in Delhi on September 9-10, Jawan's revenues had little to no impact. "Cinemas in certain areas were shut due to restrictions because of the G20 Summit. A marginal impact of Rs 4-5 crore is estimated for Jawan's business due to the closure of a couple of cinemas as they were premium theatres. But mostly people travelled to theatres situated around Delhi like in Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram to watch Jawan in theatres," said an official of a multiplex chain.
Theatres including PVR Rivoli, PVR Plaza, INOX Odeon CP and PVR ECX Chanakyapuri were shut due to G20 Summit restrictions. A PVR Inox official said that there was no impact on business due to the G20 Summit restrictions and that footfall recorded over the weekend was above expectation. All four theatres are now open.
Other languages
Jawan's dubbed version including Tamil and Telugu has fared strong with business of over Rs 30 crore. "Jawan's business from Southern languages is big for a Hindi film. Pathaan so far has the highest business for dubbed versions for a Hindi film. Pathaan's lifetime (total) business is around Rs 30 crore from dubbed versions. Jawan in four days of its release has collected Rs 30 crore from Southern languages. We expect more business coming from the dubbed versions," Johar said.
Pathaan was released in Tamil and Telugu languages along with Hindi.
Jawan versus Pathaan, Gadar 2
Jawan with Rs 180 crore has surpassed Pathaan's overseas business in opening weekend. The January 25 release had collected Rs 112 crore from international markets. The film has also surpassed Gadar 2's overseas business so far which stands at around Rs 65 crore.
"We estimate Jawan to surpass Gadar 2’s India business. When compared to Pathaan, we need to see the weekday business of Jawan. First Monday business of Jawan will be critical. Gadar 2 and Pathaan had seen a 40-45 percent drop during their first weekday business," Johar said.
Hindi films saw a turnaround in business when Sunny Deol-starrer Gadar 2 did record business at the box office. The movie released on August 11 is currently the second highest-grossing Hindi film with its India collections at Rs 512 crore. It has surpassed the business of the Hindi version of Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, which earned Rs 510 crore. Pathaan with its India collection of over Rs 524 crore is the highest-grossing Hindi film so far.
"We expect strong business from upcoming big films as well like Salman Khan's Tiger 3 and Shah Rukh Khan's Dunki. Hindi box office is down by 20 percent versus pre-Covid level but I see a high possibility of full recovery this year itself. We did have a couple of lean months in 2023 because of a lack of release planning. But If medium-scale films also do well and bring in business of Rs 100-150 crore then the annual box office will be healthy," the expert added.
