Friday releases The Great Indian Family - starring Vicky Kaushal, Manushi Chhillar, Manoj Pahwa and Kumud Mishra - among others, and Sukhee, headlined by Shilpa Shetty, failed to make a splash on opening day for lack of publicity and due to limited release, respectively.
The Great Indian Family hardly saw any promotions or marketing leading up to its release, and failed to pull audiences in. The collections have come to a mere Rs 1.50 crore* on Day 1 - given that Vicky Kaushal’s last release Zara Hatke Zara Bachke was a superhit at the box office, this is disappointing. In fact the film was produced by YRF which gave us Pathaan earlier this year and single-handedly set the benchmark for huge box-office collections. While it’s understandable that this is a much smaller film and is not aiming for even 10 percent of the business Pathaan did, still it could have aimed for a lifetime of Rs 25-30 crore and arrived in theatres accordingly - but then that hasn’t happened.
Shilpa Shetty starrer Sukhee saw a token release before its OTT arrival, and is playing just a show or two in some theatres. As a result, the collections were just in a few lakhs, despite positive word of mouth.
Meanwhile, it’s Jawan all the way as the film has now entered the 500 Crore Club in India across all languages - the Hindi version alone is set to get there by tomorrow. The collections are huge, with the Shah Rukh Khan starrer turning out to be the third Bollywood film to cross the Rs 500 crore mark, the other two being Pathaan - also starring SRK - and Sunny Deol’s Gadar 2.
Earnings for Jawan have stayed stable even now, at the start of the third week - Rs 7.62 crore came in on its third Friday in theatres. The overall collections for the film at cinemas across India stand at Rs 536 crore, including Rs 55.46 crore from the Telugu and Tamil versions. These are the best numbers ever by a distance for any Hindi film to have collected from the south versions. As for just the Hindi version, it currently reads Rs 480.54 crore and it should cross the Rs 500 crore mark by tomorrow.
Next week, films will release on Thursday owing to the partial holiday of Eid. Fukrey 3 and The Vaccine War are two anticipated films to arrive and they belong to contrasting genres. While the former is a comedy, the latter is a serious take on India’s vaccine story. Fukrey 3 is expected to take a good start at the box office and should open in double digits. On the other hand, The Vaccine War would be looking at word of mouth to do the trick, just as was the case with Vivek Agnihotri’s last two films The Kashmir Files and The Tashkent Files.
