Edelweiss Mutual Funds CEO Radhika Gupta has revealed that when she had to board a Vistara flight from Delhi recently, she was told that the waiting time at the security check-in at T3 terminal was 256 minutes. That's over four hours. She, however, did not end up missing her flight because of "the kindness of Vistara staff".
The Shark Tank India judge was responding to a post on X where a senior journalist complained of crowding at the same terminal. "People are on the verge of missing their flights," Krishna Kant (@KantKrishna30), a senior associate editor with Business Standard shared on X with a video and tagged the official profiles of the ministry of civil aviation and the Delhi airport.
Gupta retweeted the video and said that she had experienced a similar situation. "I saw this myself. A harrowed (don’t blame him) airline staff told me the average wait time at security was 256 minutes. 256 minutes. Was fortunate to make the flight because of the kindness of Vistara staff but do hope it is addressed," she wrote.
Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport was recently declared the 10th busiest airport in the world, with a passenger traffic of 72.2 million flyers and on Wednesday evening, people took to X to share pictures of long queues at the check-in counters.
"If you are flying from T3 Delhi, make sure to reach airport 3 hours before. Look at the current situation. Lines are this big that it's reaching the check in counters. Digiyatra or no digityatra everyone is entring the digityatra queue. Chaotic!" wrote entrepreneur Priyesh Sharma (@Kenu73).
Jagriti Chandra (@jagritichandra), a reporter from The Hindu, said that screens indicating the waiting time were switched off once they sent the airport authorities a picture of the waiting time displayed at the time which was 266 minutes -- well over four hours.
"Security check is the most unpredictable thing at Delhi airport. The only reason why I reach airport 2.5-3 hours in advance even for short distance domestic flights. You can get inside in 30 mins or you can miss your flight standing there. Can they simply not utilise more space and make it easier for passengers?" asked Stuti Mishra, a journalist with The Independent.
Responding to complaints on social media, the former CEO of Jet Airways, Sanjiv Kapoor, said he believes that airports are doing the best they can. "Basis my recent observations, I think airports are doing the best they can. The bottleneck is security - seems everything has to come out of bags except clothes! Takes 3-5 times per pax relative to global standards. That is what needs to be streamlined and modernized urgently!"
The Delhi airport is yet to release a statement on the current situation.
