Shiv Sena Member of Parliament Priyanka Chaturvedi criticised the time given for leaders to speak inside Parliament to debate on the Election Commission of India (ECI) bill. Chaturvedi compared the time allotted to "2-minute Maggi noodles" and said that leaders had learnt how to express their views inside those two minutes.
Writing on X (formerly Twitter), she said that ECI's role was bigger than just conducting elections in a fair manner.
"2 minute Maggi noodles is what is advertised however we have learnt how to make a point in less than 2 minutes, though time allotted could have been more generous but on ECI bill,
1) ECI’s role is larger than just free&fair elections &electoral enrolment and maintaining electoral rolls
2) ECI is also entrusted with adjudication of disputes in political parties. Maharashtra has seen biased decision hence 2:1 bill in favour of ruling dispensation is unfair& against democratic, constitutional principles," Chaturvedi wrote on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday.
Chaturvedi's comments got support from users, who felt that parliamentarians needed to be given more time to talk.
"Chairman has time for his bakaiti while interrupting the speakers but doesn’t have time for the speakers," one user wrote.
"Can’t agree more here over the time. 2 minutes is so less time for anyone to raise an opinion. Time should be cut off from the people who support a bill/resolution.. because they’ll only have praise for their leader which they do outside too.. that time should be given to concerns," another user wrote.
"You handled the situation with so much poise, without expressing any anger, unlike many others," a third user wrote.
