Mumbai pre-monsoon rains: Waterlogging in low-lying areas

Monsoons arrived ahead of schedule in Maharashtra as Mumbai recorded 98 mm of rain in 12 hours on Sunday. The pre-monsoon showers waterlogged low-lying areas like Dadar, Jogeshwari, Vikhroli, Mazagaon, Malad.

Mercury dipped as monsoon arrived well ahead of schedule in Maharashtra. While rains brought cheers to many, Mumbai, which recorded 98 mm of rain in just 12 hours on Sunday, also witnessed waterlogging at several parts of the city.

According to the Met department, rain is likely to continue over the next two days. The monsoons have also advanced into the remaining parts of west coast and covered most parts of Madhya Pradesh and some more parts of south Chhattisgarh. Also read: Monsoon set for above average rainfall in first week The temperatures cooled to a pleasant minimum of 23 degrees Celsius and maximum of 29 degrees Celsius in Mumbai on Sunday, and a similar range is forecast for the next two days. According to the Met department, rain is likely to continue over the next two days in Mumbai. Torrential rain since Saturday night resulted in waterlogging in several areas of the city, disrupting normal life. The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) Disaster Management Cell said over one-and-half foot flooding was witnessed in Dadar east area following heavy rain. Certain low-lying areas in Jogeshwari, Vikhroli, Mazagaon, Malad and other areas also reported waterlogging after the downpour. Other parts of Maharashtra also received rainfall, bringing respite from water scarcity and intense heat in the past few months. Many parts of the state, including Mumbai, were lashed by intermittent pre-monsoon showers last week, which have claimed 10 lives so far. (With inputs from agencies)
