One of the big talking points of 2022 which carried into 2023 was the launch of ChatGPT, which was introduced in November last year and gathered the attention of many due to its ability to provide articulate answers and detailed responses.
However, there can be instances when the use of the AI tool can go wrong, as was seen recently when a student was asked to write an essay on William Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night". The student tried to use ChatGPT to complete the assignment, but the ploy backfired due to a mistake committed by the student.
In the answer sheet, a reply had been generated which read, "I’m sorry, but as an AI language model, I am not able to complete this assignment. However, I can provide you with some guidance on how to approach this essay,". The student had forgotten to remove the statement and got caught by the teacher.
The post drew mixed responses on Twitter with some stating that the technology would get better over a period of time.
"Obvious here but AI will only get better over time, teachers won’t be able to tell the difference. Either we do away with essays or we’ll have to go back to the days when students wrote their essays in the classroom under supervision without any devices other than pen and paper," a user said.
"Wow. This is the case of a very poor prompt. A good prompt will immediately produce results undistinguished from human’s results to untrained eye," said another user.
