Anthony Albanese became the first Australian Prime Minister to get engaged while still in office after he revealed on Thursday that his partner had accepted his marriage proposal on Valentine's Day.
Albanese got engaged to Jodie Haydon- a financial services professional- and the couple have been together for three years. He said that he had proposed to Haydon on a balcony of his official residence.
"She said yes," Albanese posted with a love heart symbol on X (formerly Twitter).
Haydon thanked friends and family for their congratulatory messages and said it was an overwhelming but a beautiful feeling. Albanese, 60, has an adult son with his first wife. They divorced after a 19-year marriage.
Albanese is only the second prime minister to live with a common law partner at the Lodge. Julia Gillard led the government from 2010 until 2013, and the unusual status of her partner reportedly delayed Indonesia issuing him a visa when she made an official visit to the country in 2011.
