2 Indian researchers win global award for research on smelly shoes: 'We recruited brave human noses'

Two Indian researchers have won international recognition for their unconventional study on foul-smelling shoes and their impact on the user experience of shoe racks. The duo was awarded the engineering prize at the 35th Ig Nobel Awards, held at Boston University on Thursday night.

Organised annually by the science humour magazine Annals of Improbable Research, the Ig Nobel Prizes celebrate the quirky, curious and often hilarious side of scientific inquiry — just weeks before the real Nobel Prizes are announced.

The Indian researchers, Vikash Kumar and Sarthak Mittal, were honoured for probing “how foul-smelling shoes affect the good experience of using a shoe-rack”.

Kumar is an assistant professor in the Department of Design, School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Shiv Nadar University in Noida. Previously, he worked as a programmer analyst at Cognizant in Chennai. Mittal
