Google scientist Dr Timnit Gebru's exit exposes rift in its ethical AI unit, head Jeff Dean faces criticism

Following the exit of Dr Timnit Gebru, one of the few Black women in AI division of Google, a group of hundreds of academics and researchers wrote an open letter seeking explanation from unit head Jeff Dean and his colleagues

Two days after an abrupt departure of Dr Timnit Gebru, Staff Research Scientist and Co-Lead of Ethical Artificial Intelligence (AI) team at Alphabet Inc's Google, the US tech giant's AI division and its head Jeff Dean have come under heavy criticism.

On December 2, renowned scientist and former Google’s Ethical Artificial Intelligence unit co-head Dr Gebru said she was fired over an email she authored - expressing dismay with the management.

Dr Gebru, one of the few Black women in her field, also added that the firm took action for the mail in which she mentioned the way it handled a review of her research.
