The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Wednesday alleged that Union ministers Kiren Rijiju and Ravneet Singh Bittu “assaulted” its female MPs during protests in the Lok Sabha.
“While we were protesting against the Bill, Union Ministers Ravneet Singh Bittu and Kiren Rijiju attacked me, they pushed me… This is condemnable," TMC MP Mitali Bagh told ANI.
The uproar began when Union Home Minister Amit Shah introduced three key legislations — the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, the Jammu & Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, and the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill.
These bills propose a framework under which the Prime Minister, Chief Ministers, and Union Ministers could face removal if they remain in jail for 30 consecutive days.
As Shah tabled the bills, opposition MPs raised slogans, denouncing the measures as “draconian.” It was during this protest, TMC alleged, that its MPs were manhandled by ministers from the ruling party.
However, sources cited by CNN-News18 said no evidence, including CCTV footage, supported claims that TMC MPs were pushed or assaulted by Union ministers Rijiju and Bittu.
Additionally, BJP MP Ravneet Singh Bittu strongly dismissed the charge, calling it “fabricated.” “It is not my culture to push anyone. I want to ask the TMC, who is teaching them all this? Is it Mamata Banerjee?," he said while speaking to CNN-News18.
“My family has laid down their life for the country, and I don’t belong to such a political ideology where women have to be disrespected," he added.
