Under the Pradhan Mantri Gati Shakti (PMGS), one of the more ambitious programmes of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a total investment of more than Rs 1 lakh crore has been approved for 22 major infrastructure projects, sources have said.
According to the sources, the Network Planning Group (NPG) has recommended these projects for implementation. The NPG is a group of officers of different departments under the PMGS.
Of these 22, eight are under the ministry of housing and urban affairs, six projects are under the ministry of railways, four under the ministry of petroleum and natural gas, two projects are under the ministry of road transport and highways, and two are related to industrial corridors.
These include three corridors of the Delhi Mass Rapid Transport System (DMRTS), phase IV, for a total investment of Rs 13,011.25 crore; the Thane internal metro rail project, worth Rs 10,412 crore; extension of the Pune metro for Rs 3,668.04 crore; and the Noida metro extension for Rs 2,456 crore.
Two Integrated Manufacturing Clusters (IMC) have been approved. One at Rajpura in Punjab, with a total investment of Rs 1,367.72 crore, and the other at Udham Singh Nagar in Uttrakhand. These IMCs will ensure speedy access to markets, adequate supply of water and power, and waste management, and recycling facilities for manufacturers and investors.
An aviation turbine fuel (ATF) pipeline from Malkapur terminal to Hyderabad international airport, to be developed by Indian Oil, has been approved. Two natural gas pipeline projects have also been approved.
Approval of these projects means that now there won’t be any hurdles in terms of coordination between different departments, and the projects will be speedily implemented.
Earlier this year in June, the Ministry of Steel had identified 38 high-impact projects to develop multimodal connectivity and bridge infrastructure gaps under PM Gati Shakti.
The PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan was launched on October 13, 2021. It envisioned a digital portal with all existing and planned infrastructure initiatives of 16 ministries and departments for coordinated planning and execution of projects. Central government departments, including Railways, Roads and Highways, Petroleum and Gas, Power, Telecom, Shipping, and Aviation are a part of it.
The scheme seeks to end bureaucratic entanglements and break inter-ministerial silos that hold up infrastructure projects and drive up their costs.
