The Bharatiya Janata Party’s decision to hand over the Uttar Pradesh unit to seven-time MP and Union minister Pankaj Chaudhary is being seen as a calculated political move aimed at blunting Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav’s PDA narrative and rebuilding the BJP’s backward caste base ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.

Party leaders say Chaudhary’s appointment is not symbolic. Kurmis are widely regarded as the most influential backward caste after Yadavs in Uttar Pradesh and have traditionally formed a bulwark against the Samajwadi Party’s Yadav-centric support base. However, the 2024 Lok Sabha elections exposed cracks in that alignment. Despite having several Kurmi leaders and allies, including Apna Dal (S), the BJP saw significant erosion of Kurmi votes, a shift that contributed to its sharp decline from 62 seats in 2019 to 36 seats in 2024.

Political observers say this loss forced the BJP into a rethink.
