The National Students' Union of India (NSUI) has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting that a college under the Delhi University be named after late former PM Manmohan Singh instead of VD Savarkar.
The students' body has also urged the Prime Minister to name a central university after Manmohan Singh, who passed away on December 26, 2024 at 92.
The letter, written by NSUI president Varun Choudhary, urged Prime Minister Modi to reconsider the naming of the college after Hindutva ideologue Veer Savarkar and dedicate it to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh instead.
It said that Manmohan Singh's passing has left a deep void, and the most fitting tribute to his legacy would be to dedicate premier educational institutions in his name.
"Dr Singh's monumental contributions, including the Central Universities Act, 2009, RTE Act 2009 established IITs, IIMs, AIIMS, and a network of central universities across India. These initiatives revolutionized the nation's education system, benefitting millions," it said.
NSUI made three demands, saying that a world-class college under DU be named after Singh, a central university be dedicated to his name and his life journey be made part of the academic curricula.
The government must act immediately to recognize Singh's unparalleled contributions to India.
Singh, the architect of economic reforms in India, passed away at Delhi's AIIMS hospital on December 26.
