'Not there to cut deals, trust judges': CJI Chandrachud on PM Modi's Ganesh Chaturthi visit

The Prime Minister visited my home for a purely private event, it was not a public event. Well, I do feel that, you know, there was absolutely nothing wrong for the simple reason that these are continuing meetings between the Judiciary and the Executive, even at a social level, says CJI.

Urging the public to “trust” judges, Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud said dialogue between the judiciary and the executive, even if some of these exchanges are in social settings, is a routine imperative of the court’s functioning.

The 50th Chief Justice of India was speaking at the Express Adda in New Delhi. “The fact of the matter is, as I said, deals are never cut like this (during such interactions). So please, trust us, we are not there to cut deals,” said Chandrachud.

He also spoke about the backlash about Prime Minister Narendra Modi attending the Ganpati Puja at his residence earlier this year. “The Prime Minister visited my home for a purely private event, it was not a public event. Well, I do feel that, you know, there was absolutely nothing wrong for the simple reason that these are continuing meetings between the Judiciary and the Executive, even at a social level,” said Justice Chandrachud.

When asked if, looking back, he would have liked to tweak the frame by having other judges or the Leader of the Opposition Chandrachud said that would have made it a selection committee. “Well, I wouldn’t include the Leader of the Opposition because it is not a selection committee for appointing the Central Vigilance Commissioner or the Director of CBI,” he told Indian Express.
