As tensions flared up between India and Pakistan last week, the National Informatics Centre (NIC) worked tirelessly to defend the country’s digital infrastructure from a surge in cyberattacks, said Abhishek Singh, Director General of the NIC , on Friday.
Speaking at the Network18 Powering Bharat Summit, Singh said, “NIC manages the entire government architecture. In the last few weeks, we saw increased attacks on our infrastructure. The NIC team worked day and night to safeguard the systems.”

He also acknowledged the heightening frequency and sophistication of such attacks and stressed the critical role played by NIC in ensuring digital resilience across various government platforms during a period of geopolitical sensitivity.
Singh’s remarks come against the backdrop of escalating hostilities between India and Pakistan following the launch of Operation Sindoor by Indian armed forces on May 7. The cross-border tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbours were accompanied by attempts to breach India’s cyber defences.
The surge in hostilities followed a series of provocations and retaliatory actions along the India-Pakistan border between May 7 and May 10, including cross-border firing, militant attacks, and diplomatic confrontations.
Pakistan-based hacker groups, allegedly supported by state actors, intensified efforts to breach Indian government networks, targeting critical infrastructure, communication systems, and public services. India, in turn, ramped up its cyber defense and counteroffensive measures to protect sensitive data and maintain operational continuity.
The Powering Bharat Summit, organised by Network18 in collaboration with Moneycontrol, News18 India, and CNBC Awaaz, aims to bring into the spotlight the digital and technological strides being made by India in the face of evolving challenges.
