India’s rainfall surplus widened further to 7.3 percent above normal on September 1, as Andhra Pradesh and Telangana received excess rain, according to data released by India Meteorological Department.
Andhra Pradesh and Telangana saw nearly 1,000 percent excess rainfall on September 1, along with eight more states receiving excess or heavily excess rainfall.
The country ended August with a cumulative rainfall of 6.9 percent above normal since start of the monsoon season.
The country is expected to receive above normal rainfall in September as well, IMD said on August 31.
Eight states, four each in the North West, East and North East, however, continued to be in the deficient zone.
India’s reservoir levels were 19 percent above the 10-year average on August 29, according to data released by Central Water Commission.
Southern states and western region have a reservoir capacity 30 percent capacity over normal, while water levels in western states of Gujarat and Maharashtra were 36 percent over normal on August 29.
Kharif acreage was 1.9 percent higher than the previous year as on August 27. Rice acreage was 4.3 percent above the 2023 levels, while pulses sowing was 5.7 percent higher.
Jute and cotton sowing was 10 percent lower than 2023 until August 27.
