Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam is currently on an eight-day state visit to India, which began this Tuesday. Ramgoolam landed at Mumbai airport by a commercial flight from Port Louis.
The Mauritian PM will reportedly leave for Varanasi by a special flight on Wednesday afternoon after attending a business event at a luxury hotel in Mumbai in the morning, an official told PTI.
“Prime Minister of Mauritius Navinchandra Ramgoolam will undertake a state visit to India from September 9-16,” the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement.
This is the first overseas bilateral visit of Ramgoolam to India in his present term.
Apart from Mumbai, Ramgoolam will also visit Varanasi, Ayodhya and Tirupati. Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Mauritius in March.
The Prime Minister of Mauritius will be in Varanasi for three days from September 10-12. During his Varanasi visit, he will participate in bilateral talks with PM Modi.
During his visit to Varanasi, the Mauritius leader will also participate in Ganga aarti, according to member of legislative council Dharmendra Singh said.
Ramgoolam is scheduled to offer prayers at the Kashi Vishwanath temple on the morning of September 12 before departing from the city.
“During his visit to India, Prime Minister Ramgoolam will call-on Rashtrapati Ji and hold discussions with Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi to further the ‘enhanced strategic partnership’,” according to the MEA statement.
Post his visit to Varanasi, the Mauritius PM will leave for Ayodhya on September 12, followed by engagements in Dehradun on September 13 and 14, and a visit to Tirupati on September 15.
Later that day, the delegation will arrive in Delhi to continue the official programme.
On September 16, the Mauritian Prime Minister and his spouse will lay wreaths at Rajghat and Sadaiv Atal, visit the New Parliament Building, and hold calls with the President and a Cabinet Minister. The visit will conclude with their departure from Delhi, according to the MEA.
Ramgoolam had earlier visited India in May 2014 as the only non-SAARC leader invited to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the Prime Minister and the Council of Ministers.
“India and Mauritius share a close and special relationship rooted in shared historical, cultural and people to people ties. As India's key maritime neighbor in the Indian Ocean Region, Mauritius holds a special place in India's Vision MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Region) and the ‘Neighbourhood First Policy’ and is a key partner in the Global South,” the MEA said.
The visit of Prime Minister Ramgoolam to India, following the visit of the Indian Prime Minister to Mauritius in March 2025, aims to advance the strong and enduring bonds between the two nations, the MEA release said.
