The elderly in Baramati still remember a young Ajit Pawar hacking his way in the crowded streets of the town on his Rajdoot motorcycle. The two wheeler was his favourite mode of his transport to connect with the locals. Three decades later, he has emerged as a prominent figure in Maharashtra politics and many in the political corridors refer to him as "CM in waiting." Ajit Pawar is often described by various labels: a strong leader, a skilled administrator, a rebel, an opportunist, and even a corrupt individual.

His early life was marked by personal hardships after the death of his father, leaving him to shoulder the family’s responsibilities from a young age.

Ajit Pawar entered politics in the 1980s, following the path carved by Sharad Pawar, who had risen to prominence through the cooperative sugar industry. In 1982, Ajit joined a sugar mill board, followed by a role as chairman of the Pune district’s Central Cooperative Bank. His first major political success came in 1991 when he was elected as a Member of Parliament from Baramati on a Congress ticket, though he soon had to vacate his seat for his uncle.
