IMD fears this could be the warmest year ever as heat wave spreads across India

IMD has warned that this year could be warmer than 2023.

The weather department in its latest advisory has warned of severe heat wave conditions over large parts of eastern India and the gangetic plain for the next few days.

IMD's DS Pai told CNBC-TV18 in an conversation that this year could turn out to be the warmest ever recorded, overtaking the record of 2023.

An intense heat will felt across eastern India, with a heat wave alert being issued across the gangetic West Bengal over next five days, along with parts of North Odisha. The IMD added that Bihar and Jharkhand too will see a strong possibility of a heatwave over next five days. The peninsular India could face heatwave like conditions over the next week, according to the weather department.

The latest IMD bulletin talks about 'heat wave to severe heat wave conditions' prevailing in many places over gangetic West Bengal and parts of Odisha. Heat wave conditions are likely in isolated places across Bihar, Jharkhand, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Rayalaseema, interior Karnataka and Eastern Uttar Pradesh during the next few days.
