Coronavirus Omicron LIVE Updates | COVID third wave to impact securitisation, FY22 volumes will fall below earlier estimates: Icra
Lockdowns to contain the spread of the third COVID wave hurt loan collections and new lending by non-banks, and will in turn impact securitisation volumes, a domestic rating agency said on Tuesday. The overall volumes of securitisation where a non-bank lender passes on future receivables against loans or a bunch of loans to another entity for upfront cash will come at Rs 1-1.1 lakh crore in FY22 as against the Rs 1.2 lakh estimated earlier, Icra said in a report.
Securitisation volumes could thus be affected in the January-March quarter because the NBFCs (Non Bank Finance Companies) and HFCs (Housing Finance Companies) may curtail disbursements, especially to COVID-impacted sectors, and investors would prefer to wait for the threat to subside, the agency said. Some states have already started imposing restrictions though of a milder nature so far, Icra's group head for structured finance Abhishek Dafria said, adding the lockdowns not only impact the collection ability as staff members fall ill but also the income generating ability of the borrowers.
In the event that the severity of the COVID infections grows and results in higher hospitalisation rates, the state governments may impose stringent lockdowns to control the spread of the virus and investors will also wait for the threat to subside, he said. "Higher proportion of securitisation transactions are usually placed in March and thus we hope the spread of the virus would be contained sooner," Dafria noted.
According to him, lower disbursements would also impact the growth of the securitisation market in FY23, he added. Traditionally, securitisation through Direct Assignment (DA) transactions (bilateral assignment of pool of retail loans from one entity to another) has accounted for about two-third of total volumes, with Pass Through Certificate (PTC) transactions (loans are sold to an SPV which issues PTCs) accounting for the balance.
Due to the concerns around the COVID-related disruptions, preference for PTCs has increased (45 per cent share in Q3 volumes) since the credit enhancements in such structures would be able to absorb higher-than-expected losses than may arise in the transaction, the agency said.

Coronavirus Omicron LIVE Updates | COVID-19 pandemic has not impacted India's long-term growth trajectory: N Chandrasekaran
The coronavirus pandemic has not impacted India's long-term growth trajectory although it has delayed it and in this decade, the country will lead the global growth rates, Tata group Chairman N Chandrasekaran said on Tuesday.
Speaking at tech giant Microsoft's annual flagship event, Future Ready, he said it should be a national priority to enable access to healthcare and education using digital infrastructure for all in the country, considering how the acceleration of digital adoption during the pandemic has created a divide as many people, who do not have the means and access, have been left behind.
"There are many things going for India. I think as the economy fully opens up post the pandemic, I believe that our growth will continue to get stronger. We'll get the full benefit of the consumer spend," Chandrasekaran said. He further said, "the pandemic per se has not really impacted the long-term growth trajectory of India. It has delayed it because the fundamental factors, whether it is formalisation of the economy, the youth or more people coming into the middle income, all of these are totally intact."
In the current global context, he said, "I think the Indian situation is pretty unique and India's growth is going to be more fundamentally important going forward. Because even if the global growth is going to be good, it's going to be a little bit behind the expected levels of 2021. So given that, I feel India has a larger role to play."

Coronavirus Omicron LIVE Updates | Insurers see spike in Omicron claims, but fewer than second wave
Indian health insurance companies have started bracing themselves for yet another surge in COVID-19 claims, with cashless hospitalisation claims seeing an uptick. The country, particularly Mumbai and Delhi, are in the throes of a third wave that health experts say is likely to be driven by the Omicron variant. India recorded 1,79,962 daily new cases on January 10, and the active case tally rose to 7,23,619.
As on January 3, the general insurance industry had received 17.86 lakh COVID-19 claims and the cumulative claim amount crossed Rs 20,000 crore. This was over 80 percent higher compared to financial year 2020-21, when the industry received 9.86 lakh. During financial year 2021-22, health insurers settled 16.38 lakh COVID claims amounting to Rs 14,916 crore.
Hospitalisation claims have shot up in the last ten days, but are still fewer than what insurers had witnessed during the second wave in March-May 2021. “From 3-5 cashless claims on December 28, we are now seeing close to 30 daily cashless claims on an average now. The number of cases has galloped in the last two weeks. Though hospitalisation rate so far is lower compared to the delta wave, these are early days and hence, we are guarded,” says Bhabatosh Mishra, Director, Underwriting, Products and Claims, Niva Bupa Health Insurance. Standalone health insurer Manipal Cigna is now receiving 15 hospitalisation claims per day.
Home care treatment claims have also seen a rise. “Number of hospitalisation claims has increased, but it’s too early to read the trends. Home treatment claims have picked up and we expect a further increase as more people are likely to recoup at home than get admitted to hospitals,” says Sanjay Datta, Chief, Underwriting, Claims and Reinsurance, ICICI Lombard General Insurance.
