Coronavirus News LIVE Updates: Today is the 309th day since India implemented a nationwide lockdown to help curb the novel coronavirus pandemic. So far, India has recorded 1,06,89,527 confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 1,53,724 deaths. A total of 1,03,59,305 people have recuperated from COVID-19 so far. There are 1,76,498 active cases in the country as of date, which comprises 1.65 percent of the total caseload, the data stated. India's recovery rate continues to rise and now stands at 96.91 percent. Globally, more than 10 crore people have been infected by the novel coronavirus and 21.54 lakh have died so far. Many countries, including India, have granted emergency use authorization for COVID-19 vaccines and have started vaccinating healthcare workers and high-risk groups. India's regulator has granted restricted emergency use approval for two vaccines -- Covishield and Covaxin. Over 20 lakh people have been given their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine in India so far.

The joint study conducted by Bharat Biotech and ICMR, published in bioRxiv, an open access preprint journal biological sciences, found that the Sera collected from Covaxin receipients neutralised UK-variants. Dr Reddy's Laboratories today announced termination of Avigan trial study being conducted in Kuwait that was focused on moderate to severe COVID-19 patients in a hospital setting. It was one of the studies in the overall clinical programme for Fujifilm's Avigan, an antiviral medication, spanning the spectrum of asymptomatic to severe cases of COVID-19 in both outpatient and inpatient setting, the drug major said in a statement. The Phase-III study, being conducted in an outpatient setting on patients with mild to moderate symptoms in North America by the company in partnership with Appili Therapuetics and Global Response Aid, shall continue, it added. Sixty-eight percent of South Africa's Indian-origin population will definitely or probably take a COVID-19 vaccine, with 14 percent saying they would probably or definitely not take it, while the rest 18 percent were undecided, according to a study. Last week, South Africa's health regulatory body granted approval to the world's largest drug manufacturer Serum Institute of India (SII) to supply COVID-19 vaccine to the country. Health Minister Zweli Mkhize announced on Friday that the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) has granted approval to the SII, which is producing the vaccine in collaboration with the University of Oxford and AstraZeneca, to supply the drug to the country. Odisha's COVID-19 tally on January 27 mounted to 3,34,667 as 138 more people tested positive for the disease, a health department official said.
Eighty-one new cases were reported from quarantine centres and 57 detected during contact tracing.
Cuttack district recorded the highest number of fresh cases at 26, followed by Nuapada and Sundargarh at 15 each.
Six districts -- Dhenkanal, Kandhamal, Kendrapara, Koraput, Nayagarh and Nabarangpur -- did not register any new case since Tuesday, the official said.

Health workers in Myanmar on January 27 became the first people in the Southeast Asian country to be vaccinated against COVID-19, five days after the first vaccines were delivered from India.
State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar’s leader, announced last week that front-line health workers would get priority for inoculations with the vaccine developed by Oxford University and the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca. Sri Lanka will purchase 2 to 3 million doses of Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine from its Indian manufacturing company Serum Institute of India during the next two days, a top Sri Lankan official said in Colombo today. Lalith Weeratunga, the advisor to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa said that purchasing from India will follow Thursday's arrival of India's free vaccines to Sri Lanka. He said the Indian Covishield vaccine is to arrive tomorrow and the consignment will be accepted by President Rajapaksa at the Colombo international airport. A total of 250,000 people, mostly health frontline workers, members of the security forces and police and the vulnerable aged, will get the vaccine on a priority basis. (PTI)

Thousands of health workers lined up across Nepal to get the coronavirus vaccine Wednesday as the Himalayan nation began a three-month vaccination campaign.
