Coronavirus News Highlights: India is witnessing a second wave of COVID-19 pandemic. So far, the country has recorded over 2.78 crore confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 3,25,972 deaths. A total of 2,54,54,320 people have recuperated from COVID-19 so far. There are 21,14,508 active COVID-19 cases in the country as of date, which comprises 7.58 percent of the total caseload, the data stated. India's recovery rate now stands at 91.25 percent. Globally, more than 16.97 crore people have been infected by the coronavirus and 35.29 lakh have died so far. India has begun the third phase of the vaccination drive in which everyone above 18 years of age will be able to get the COVID-19 vaccine. India's regulator has granted restricted emergency use approval for three vaccines - Covishield, Covaxin and Sputnik V. The cumulative number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in India has crossed 21.2 crore, according to the Union Health Ministry.

It was prolonged until June 21, a spokesman for Italian Health Minister Roberto Speranza said in a statement.The B.1.617 variant of the coronavirus was first detected in India last year and has been blamed for much of a devastating Covid-19 wave that has battered South Asian nations in recent weeks.This week, the World Health Organization (WHO) said the variant has officially spread to 53 territories, and has been linked to seven other territories by unofficial sources, taking the total to 60.In an interview with AFP, WHO regional director for Europe Hans Kluge said the increased contagiousness of the new variants of the coronavirus, including the Indian one, was one of his main worries."We know for example that the B.1617 is more transmissible than the B.117 (British variant), which already was more transmissible than the previous strain," the Belgian doctor said. The Railways has delivered over 21,392 tonnes of liquid medical oxygen in more than 1,274 tankers to 15 states, the national transporter said Sunday amid the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.So far, 313 Oxygen Express trains have completed their journey while five loaded trains are on the run with more than 406 tonnes of liquid medical oxygen in 23 tankers.Liquid Medical Oxygen delivery toHaryanaandKarnatakahas crossed 2,000 tonnes each while TamilNaduandTelanganaeach have received over 1,800 tonnes of the life-saving gas.Oxygen Express trains started their deliveries on April 24 with Maharashtra receiving a load of 126 tonnes. The union territory ofPuducherry added 930 fresh coronavirus cases during the last 24 hours taking the overall caseload to 1,03,826, a senior officialof the Department of Health and Family Welfare Services said today.Twenty-one more people succumbed to the virus in the last 24 hours pushing the toll to 1,518, Director of Healthand Family Welfare Services S Mohan Kumar said. Twelve of the deceased were women, he said. The 930 new cases were identified at the end of the examination of 8,437 samples during the last 24 hours, theHealth Department Director said. The overall infection tally rose to 1,03,826 with the addition of the 930 new cases.The test positivity rate was 11.02 percent. The number of active cases in the union territorystood at 12,167 with 10,532 patients in home isolation and the remaining 1,635 in hospitals.He said 1,895 patients recovered and were discharged during the last 24 hours.The fatality and recovery rates were 1.46 percent and 86.82 percent respectively. The Goa government on Sunday announced compensation of Rs 2 lakh each for the kin of COVID-19 victims who were either breadwinners of the family or hailed from poor backgrounds.Making the announcement in his Statehood Day address, Chief MinisterPramodSawantalso said another scheme, called ''MukhyamantriAnathAadharYojana'', will be launched, under which orphaned children will get monthly financial aid.The age limit for inmates in childcare institutions has been raised to 21, he said, and orphans, irrespective of whether their parents succumbed to the coronavirus infection, who are in Class X will be provided free laptops by the state government.Sawantsaid his government was trying its best to tackle the outbreak and the positivity rate of the infection was steadily declining in the state.The second phase of the vaccination drive for those in the 18-44 age group will begin from June 3, the CM said. The lockdown to contain COVID-19 in Haryana has been extended by a week till June 7, the state government announced today, as it relaxed curbs imposed on shop timings and malls. The state government termed the lockdown "Mahamari Alert/Surkshit Haryana (Epidemic Alert/Safe Haryana)". Addressing a virtual press conference, Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said even though the COVID-19 situation has improved in the state, it has been decided to extend the "Mahamari Alert/Surkshit Haryana" lockdown till 5 am on June 7 with some more relaxations. He said shops which were earlier allowed to open as per odd-even basis from 7 am to 12 pm will now be open from 9 am to 3 pm. (PTI)

Mizoram reported the highest single-day spike of 329 COVID-19 cases, pushing the tally inthe state to 11,988 today, an official said. The COVID-19 death toll in the state rose to 36 withone more person succumbing to the disease in the last 24 hours, official data said. At least 249 cases were detected through Rapid AntigenTest, 68 through RT-PCR test and the remaining 12 cases were detected through TrueNat tests.More than 47 children, two Border Security Force (BSF) jawans and a healthcare worker were among the newly infectedpeople, the official data revealed. A top Kumbh Mela official said it was unfair to call it a COVID-19 "super-spreader" as just 0.2 percent of the total RT-PCR tests conducted in Haridwar from January 1 till the conclusion of the event returned a positive result, while just 0.5 percent police personnel on mela duty contracted the virus. Mela IG Sanjay Gunjyal also said the religious event formally began on April 1 by which time the second wave of COVID-19 was already raging in states like Maharashtra and Haryana. "If we scientifically analyse the Covid data of Haridwar district right from January 1 to the conclusion of Kumbh on April 30, attempts to create a perception that Kumbh was a super-spreader of the pandemic look unfair," Gunjyal told PTI.
