Coronavirus News Highlights: Today is the 349th day since India implemented a nationwide lockdown to help curb the novel coronavirus pandemic. So far, India has recorded 1,12,44,786 confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 1,57,930 deaths. A total of 1,08,99,394 people have recuperated from COVID-19 so far. Khurda district registered the highest number of new cases at 12, followed by Cuttack (eight) and Sundergarh (seven). The state's coronavirus death toll remained unchanged at 1,917 as no fresh fatality was reported. Fifty-three coronavirus patients have died due to comorbidities so far. Odisha now has 722 active cases, while 3,35,168 people have recovered from the disease to date.The state has so far tested over 85.12 lakh samples for COVID-19, including 20,081 on Monday.

A 55-year-old government doctorfrom Madhya Pradesh has died of COVID-19-related complications at a hospital in Chennai, health officials said on Tuesday.Dr Mukesh Jain, who was a pathologist at the Agar Malwa district hospital, tested positive for coronavirus last month following which he was admitted to a hospital in Indore.
He was airlifted to a private medical facility in Chennai on February 12 in a serious condition due to severe infection in his lungs, officials said. He later tested negative for the coronavirus, but because of complications associated with the infection, some of his vital organs stopped functioning, they said.

Two Maharashtra legislators onTuesday claimed there were variations in the results of COVID-19 tests conducted by different labs and sought a probe into it.
Speaking in the state Legislative Council, BJP MLC Gopichand Padalkar said two days back, his swab sample test conducted by a private laboratory in Pune came out positive for coronavirus.
"I informed my party leaders and went back to Pune to get isolated. As a precautionary measure, I gave my another swab sample on Monday to a different lab and also underwent other tests. I was surprised when the test report came out negative for coronavirus," he said.This should be thoroughly probed as two private laboratories in the same city have come out with "contradictory" reports, he said. More than 20 lakh people were inoculated against coronavirus on March 8, the highest in a day so far, taking the total number of vaccine doses administered in the country to over 2.3 crore, the Union Health Ministry said on Tuesday.As on day-52 of the COVID-19 vaccination drive (March 8), 20,19,723 vaccine doses were given.
Out of which, 17,15,380 beneficiaries were vaccinated across 28,884 sessions for 1st dose and 3,04,343 healthcare workers (HCWs) and frontline workers (FLWs) received 2nd dose of anti-coronavirus vaccine.The 17,15,380 beneficiaries include 12,22,351 aged over 60 years and 2,21,148 aged 45 to 60 with specified comorbidities. China launches COVID-19 vaccination certificates for cross-border travelChina has launched a digital COVID-19 vaccination certificate for its citizens planning cross-border travels, joining other countries issuing similar documents as they seek ways to reopen their economies.
As vaccines are globally being rolled out, a few countries including Bahrain have already introduced certificates identifying vaccinated people, and the European Union agreed to develop vaccine passports under pressure from tourism-dependent southern countries.

Twenty-six fresh COVID-19 casesin the Union Territory of Puducherry on Tuesday took the tally to 39,908, while the fatalities remained at 670 with no deathsbeing reported, the health department said.
A total of 1,704 samples were tested during the last 24 hours ending 10 AM and the cumulative number of specimensexamined so far stood at 6.40 lakh, Health and Family Welfare Services Director S Mohan Kumar said in a release.

The Delhi government on Tuesday announced that COVID-19 vaccine will be administered to people free-of-cost at its hospitals in future phases of the inoculation drive too and a provision of Rs 50 crore has been made in its annual budget for this scheme.Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, who also holds the finance portfolio, while presenting a Rs 69,000-crore budget, said Rs 9,934 crore has been allocated to the healthcare sector.
"For people to get 'freedom from COVID-19', a person can go to a private hospital and pay Rs 250 and get a vaccine shot. But, there are many who everyday have to think, whether they should spend money to get ration for the family or arrange vaccine. And, in the 75th year of Independence, this question should not arise in the minds of citizens. So, we have decided that vaccines at our hospitals will continue to be given for free to people," he said.

Recoveries continued to outnumberthe number of new COVID-19 cases in Telangana as the tally of positive cases rose to just above three lakh, while two deaths took the toll to 1,644, the state government said on Tuesday.As many as 178 people were cured of the virus against 142 fresh cases as of 8 PM on Sunday.
A maximum of 31 cases were reported by Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), followed by Rangareddy and Medchal Malkajgiri districts with 12 and 10 cases respectively, a government bulletin said.The total number of cases in the state stood at 3,00,153, while recoveries were 2,96,740 and 1,769 patients were under treatment at different hospitals.

With the addition of 610 new casesof coronavirus, the infection count in Maharashtra's Thane district has gone up to 2,70,455,an official said on Tuesday.These new cases were reported on Monday, he said. Four more persons also died of the viral infection, pushing the toll in the district to 6,306, he said, adding that the COVID-19 mortality rate in Thane is 2.33 per cent.
So far, 2,56,869 patients have recuperated from the infection in the district, which reflects a recovery rate of 94.97 per cent. There are 7,280 active COVID-19 cases in the district at present, the official said.

Two dozen widows at Vrindavan in Uttar Pradesh's Mathura district got vaccinated against COVID-19 on International Women's Day on Monday, according to a non-government organisation (NGO). The widows, most of them aged over 80 years, participated in the vaccination drive at a state-run public health facility in the temple town, NGO Sulabh Hope Foundation said.
"We have followed all restrictions and remained inside our ashram for the last one year and now we are feeling happy after taking the vaccine along with two dozen other sisters," said 86-year-old Kamla Adhikari, according to a statement. The foundation's vice president Veenita Verma expressed gratitude to the government authorities for their support. The NGO, which supports hundreds of widows living in ashrams here since 2012, said many other widows would be inoculated in the coming days. (PTI)

West Bengal's COVID-19 tally roseto 5,76,838 as 215 more people tested positive for the virus while two fresh fatalities pushed the coronavirus death toll to 10,280, a health department bulletin said on Monday. The two new deaths were reported from North 24 Parganas and Howrah district, it said.
The state now has 3,155 active COVID-19 cases, while 5,63,403 people have recovered from the disease. The COVID-19 recovery rate in the state is 97.66 per cent, the bulletin said. A total of 87,13,265 samples have been tested for COVID-19, including 14,412 samples in the last 24 hours. Meanwhile, on Monday, over one lakh people were inoculated with the COVID-19 vaccine in West Bengal, an official of the health department said.

Pakistan on Monday announced to review relaxation in COVID-19 restrictions to reopen schools and businesses like cinemas and dine-in restaurants, as the country is witnessing a surge in the number of coronavirus cases. The decision was taken after a meeting of Minister for Planning Asad Umar with the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), the key anti-coronavirus body.
Officials said that the NCOC discussed the rising COVID-19 positivity rate, progress in the vaccination campaign as well as the national vaccine strategy. A senior World Health Organisation official said that so-called vaccine passports for COVID-19 should not be used for international travel because of numerous concerns, including ethical considerations that coronavirus vaccines are not easily available globally.
At a press briefing on Monday, WHO emergencies chief Dr. Michael Ryan said there are real practical and ethical considerations for countries considering using vaccine certification as a condition for travel, adding the U.N. health agency advises against it for now. Former Rajasthan Governor Anshuman Singh died at a Lucknow hospital on Monday, a month after he was admitted there with coronavirus-related pneumonia. He was 86.The Rajasthan government declared one-day state holiday on Monday following the death of Singh.According to an official statement, Singh was admitted to Lucknow's Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences due to severe COVID pneumonia on February 8. After 10 days, he was admitted to a non-COVID ICU.
"Subsequently, his condition worsened and led to a multi-organ failure requiring life support system," the hospital said in the statement, adding that he died at 4.30 am. Anshuman Singh had taken charge as the Governor of Rajasthan on January 16, 1999 and remained in office till May 2003. (PTI)
