Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday came down heavily on the Congress, accusing it of siding with forces hostile to the nation. Speaking at a programme in Mangaldoi, located in Assam’s Darrang district, he alleged, “The Congress, instead of supporting the Indian Army, backs terrorists groomed by Pakistan. During ‘Operation Sindoor’, the Congress, instead of supporting our armed forces, which destroyed the terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan, was engaged in protecting infiltrators and anti-national forces.”
The prime minister said that ‘Operation Sindoor’ succeeded due to the blessings of Ma Kamakhya, adding that he felt honoured to be present on the sacred soil of Assam. Modi also said, “The wounds inflicted by Jawaharlal Nehru, during the Chinese aggression in 1962, on the people of Assam are yet to heal.”
During his address, the PM said that the BJP-led government would not allow land grabbing or demographic changes by illegal migrants. “The BJP will not allow infiltrators to grab land, insult women and girls, and conspire to change demography, which is a threat to national security,” he said.
Lauding Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Modi praised him for evicting infiltrators from encroached land and making way for farmers to resume cultivation. He added that the BJP’s “double-engine government is committed to realise the dreams of Assam’s great sons like Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika.” At the same time, he expressed anguish over what he termed as Congress’ insults toward the legendary singer.
The prime minister also contrasted his government’s infrastructure push with the Congress’ record. “The Congress had ruled Assam for decades, but built only three bridges over the Brahmaputra river, while the BJP-led dispensation constructed six such structures in the last 10 years,” he pointed out.
On the economic front, Modi said that India was now one of the fastest-growing economies in the world and that Assam itself had clocked a 13 per cent growth rate. “This was achieved due to the efforts of the double-engine government. The Centre and the state government are developing Assam as a health hub. The Northeast has a big role to play in achieving the ‘Viksit Bharat’ dream,” he said.
He further said that connectivity projects initiated by the BJP-led Centre have been creating new business avenues and job opportunities for the youth of the region. The prime minister also urged citizens to buy ‘swadeshi’ products to secure the future of their children.
As part of his Mangaldoi programme, Modi laid the foundation stones of health and infrastructure projects amounting to Rs 6,300 crore. Among them were the construction of Darrang Medical College and Hospital, a nursing college, and a GNM school with a total investment of Rs 570 crore, officials informed.
He also initiated work on the 2.9-km-long Narengi-Kuruwa bridge across the Brahmaputra, estimated to cost Rs 1,200 crore, as well as the 118.5-km-long Guwahati Ring Road project. The latter, connecting Assam’s Kamrup and Darrang districts with Ri Bhoi in Meghalaya, is pegged at an investment of Rs 4,530 crore.
