Chief of defence staff (CDS) general Anil Chauhan on Friday said the Indian Armed Forces had full operational freedom during Operation Sindoor – across stages from planning, selection of targets to the timing.
Addressing an event in Gorakhpur, Chauhan said, “We had full operational freedom, including planning and selection of targets, during Operation Sindoor. The aim was not to avenge the terrorist attack, but to draw a red line of our patience. It was a multi-domain operation, including cyber warfare. Coordination among military wings and joint mobilisation was a crucial aspect of it.”
Operation Sindoor, which was launched on May 7 to avenge the horrific April 22 Pahalgam attack that saw terrorists gunning down 26 persons, resulted in massive damage to terror infrastructure in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and Pakistan.
Pakistan's counter-attack caused no impact and the two nations decided to cease hostilities on May 10.
“After the Pahalgam terror attack happened, we already had enhanced precision strike capabilities. When we discussed with the political leadership, it was decided that by only using drones and loitering munitions, we will not be able to achieve the political objectives,” said CDS Chauhan.
“To destroy terrorist camps in Bahawalpur and Muridke, it was necessary to use air power...During Operation Sindoor, the political leadership provided a clear direction with a clear message to destroy the terrorist camps, and retaliate only if we are attacked,” he added.
Earlier, defence minister Rajnath Singh detailed how Operation Sindoor showcased India's prowess in using indigenous weaponry.
“Operation Sindoor has emerged as a great example demonstrating success of our indigenous platforms, equipment, and weapon systems. Its achievements have once again underlined that in the times to come, self-reliance is an absolute necessity. We have indeed made significant progress on the path of self-reliance but there is still a long way ahead that we must travel,” he said.
