The Election Commission of India on October 27 announced that Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls will be carried out across 12 states starting tomorrow.
The top election body had earlier announced that the exercise will be carried out across the country.

“All voters on that list will be given Unique Enumeration Forms by the BLOs. These Enumeration Forms will have all the necessary details from the current voter list,” CEC Gyanesh Kumar said during a press briefing.
Significantly, several opposition-ruled states, including Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Kerala are set to go to elections next year.
The announcement follows the SIR conducted in Bihar just before the beginning of the assembly elections in the state.

Why no SIR in poll-bound Assam? EC explains
The SIR exercise saw the deletion of around 65 lakh voters’ names, with further exclusions and additions and a sharp rise in suspected duplicates and fictitious address entries. The final electoral roll after all the additions and subtractions stand at 7.42 crore voters.
The SIR exercise also attracted major political backlash from opposition parties, accusing the election commission of acting at the behest of the government to manipulate voter rolls ahead of elections.
