IPL Auction 2024: From Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins to Harshal Patel - top 15 winning bids

Australia fast bowler Mitchell Starc broke all IPL auction records, as Kolkata Knight Riders spent Rs 24.75 crore to buy the two-time World Cup winner. Kolkata Knight Riders and Gujarat Titans engaged in an intense bidding war to buy the services of the experienced Australian. The bidding lasted more than 15 minutes, if not more, as the price soared from Rs 2 crore to Rs 24 crore amid debates and discussions between the parties.

Earlier in the day, Starc's compatriot, Pat Cummins, was sold to Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs 20.75 crore. Both the Australians created new records at the auction. Starc's quality lies in accuracy with the new ball upfront and in the death overs. He has a deadly yorker, and the delivery that nips back into the right-handers. He played the IPL in 2015 for Royal Challengers Bangalore, who bought the fast bowler for Rs 5 crore then. He picked up 34 wickets in 27 matches across two seasons. In 2018, KKR bought him for Rs 9.40 crore, but he missed the season due to an injury. Cummins was one of the big players for IPL 2020 as well, when KKR spent Rs 15.50 crore to buy his services.

Pat Cummins (Australia): Sunrisers Hyderabad Rs 20.5 crore

Australia captain Pat Cummins has broken Sam Curran's record of Rs 18.50 crore at the mini-auction in Dubai on Tuesday. Sunrisers Hyderabad bought the fast-bowling all-rounder for Rs 20.5 crore - the highest in the history of the cash-rich league. Cummins did not play the IPL in 2023 due to a heavy international schedule. Earlier, he appeared for Delhi Daredevils and Kolkata Knight Riders. Cummins has 45 wickets in 42 IPL games at an economy of 8.54 with best figures of 4/34. The Australian is a powerful hitter in the death overs. He has three 50s under his belt, with a best score of 66 not out.

Daryl Mitchell (New Zealand): Chennai Super Kings Rs 14 crore

Chennai Super Kings bought New Zealand all-rounder Mitchell for Rs 14 crore. The bidding started at his base price of Rs 1 crore when Delhi and Punjab escalated the price to Rs 6 crore. Punjab took it to Rs 11.25 crore before Chennai entered the ring at Rs 12 crore to finally lock it at Rs 14 crore.

Batting all-rounder Mitchell has been in demand since his impressive run in the ODI World Cup in India. He scored two 100s against India in the ICC tournament, and finished with 552 runs. Mitchell has appeared in 56 T20Is for the Black Caps, scoring 1,069 runs, including five 50s. Besides the international games, he appeared in 186 T20 games and amassed 4,003 runs with 18 50s. Mitchell played only two matches for the Rajasthan Royals in the 2022 edition, scoring only 33 runs. But he found his zone while representing Lancashire in the T20 Blast in the United Kingdom.

Harshal Patel (India): Punjab Kings Rs 11.75 crore

Patel has been in the reckoning in T20 cricket since the 2021 edition of the IPL, where he bagged 32 wickets for Royal Challengers Bangalore. The 33-year-old is known for his death bowling prowess, a skill which is always in high demand in T20 cricket to choke runs. Besides RCB, he has been part of Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals) for three seasons. Overall, Patel has 111 IPL wickets in 91 games. He is yet to prove his batting skills, with a highest score of only 36. Gujarat Titans started the bigging war, but Punjab Kings had the last laugh. Lucknow Super Giants tried to sneak in at ₹11 crore, but Punjab finally sealed it at ₹11.75 crore.

Alzarri Joseph (West Indies): Royal Challengers Bangalore Rs 11.50 crore

West Indies fast bowler Joseph will represent the Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2024. The franchise bought him for a whopping ₹11.5 crore at the auction.

Joseph entered the IPL fold in 2019 when he replaced Adam Milne in Mumbai Indians. He returned figures of 6/12 in his debut match against the Sunrisers Hyderabad. It is still the best bowling figures in the IPL.

The West Indian surpassed Sohail Tanvir, who had returned 6/14 for Rajasthan Royals against the Chennai Super Kings.

Joseph was part of the Gujarat Titans side in IPL 2022. Overall, he has 20 wickets in 19 games at an economy of 9.19. In T20 cricket, he has 121 wickets in 101 games.

Rovman Powell (West Indies): Rajasthan Royals Rs 7.40 crore

A hard-hitting middle-order batter from the West Indies with a strike-rate of 139.50 in T20 cricket, Powell has been part of the Windies setup since 2016, and has played a lot of franchise cricket around the globe. He has been part of the Caribbean Premier League and the Pakistan Super League earlier. In the IPL, he has previously featured for Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders. Powell has one 100 and 14 50s in T20 cricket, besides a 100 and five 50s in T20 Internationals. He has played 17 IPL games for 257 runs with a best score of 67 not out.

Travis Head (Australia): Sunrisers Hyderabad Rs 6.8 crore

Australia's World Cup hero Travis Head will represent Sunrisers Hyderabad. Chennai Super Kings had joined the bidding war, but eventually the left-hander went to the Hyderabad franchise. Head was the man of the match in the World Cup semifinal and final for his exploits. The Aussie is also a handy offbreak bowler, which will hold any team in good stead as all-rounders have called the shots in the IPL. Head was unsold at the auctions last year despite a same base price. Earlier, he has been part of Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2016 and 2017. The southpaw has only appeared in 23 T20Is for Australia but has scored in bulk at the Big Bash League. He has 2,494 runs in T20 cricket with one 100 and 10 50s.

Shivam Mavi (India): Lucknow Super Giants Rs 6.4 crore

Umesh Yadav (India): Gujarat Titans Rs 5.8 crore

India fast bowler Yadav brings in international experience. Yadav has 136 IPL scalps in 141 games at an economy of 8.38. In IPL 2022, he finished with 16 wickets in 12 matches for KKR. However, he could not replicate the performance in 2023.

Sunrisers started bidding before Gujarat Titans entered the fray, followed by Delhi. The price moved from Rs 2 crore to Rs 5.2 crore before Gujarat locked the deal at Rs 5.80 crore. They needed an Indian speedster after having released Shivam Mavi. Yadav has 136 wickets in 141 IPL games.

Dilshan Madushanka (Sri Lanka): Mumbai Indians Rs 4.6 crore

Chris Woakes (England): Punjab Kings Rs 4.2 crore

Harry Brook (England): Delhi Capitals Rs 4 crore

Brook was one of the big buys in the previous auction. Sunrisers Hyderabad had spent Rs 13.25 crore to get the England batter. This time, he will represent Delhi Capitals at only Rs 4 crore. Brook can play as opener as well as a middle-order batter. He scored his maiden IPL 100 in IPL 2023 for the Sunrisers against the Kolkata Knight Riders. But besides the 55-ball 100, he did not do much in the remaining games and was released from the squad. Recently, he has been in sublime form in the series against the West Indies. In the last T20I, he was unbeaten on 31 off 7 balls at a strike rate of 442.85.

Shardul Thakur (India): Chennai Super Kings Rs 4 crore

India bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur will return to Chennai Super Kings for the IPL 2024 season. Thakur played for CSK from 2018 to 2021, and Mahendra Singh Dhoni will be happy to have him back. Last year, he represented the Kolkata Knight Riders after the franchise traded him from Delhi Capitals for a whopping Rs 10.75 crore. Thakur has 89 wickets in 86 IPL games at an economy of 9.16. His best season came in 2021 when he picked up 21 wickets in the yellow jersey.

Rachin Ravindra (New Zealand): Chennai Super Kings Rs 1.8 crore

Jaydev Unadkat (India): Sunrisers Hyderabad Rs 1.6 crore
