Tata's BigBasket gears up for quick commerce war, to deploy 600 dark stores to rival Zepto, Blinkit

While BB now has been BB in operation for nearly three years, it was only last year that the company decided to focus on the quick commerce business.

India’s highly-competitive quick commerce business is set for a new battle as Tata’s BigBasket is planning a new strategy. According to an Economic Times report, BigBasket will ramp up its operations in the quick commerce segment to take on Zepto, Swiggy and Blinkit.

As part of the plan, BigBasket will set up as many as 600 dark stores across the country. These dark stores will be aligned with the mega warehouses to help reduce the delivery time. The ET report said that so far, BigBasket has around 60 large warehouses across India.

The ET report said that from September on, BigBasket will target $1 billion sales via BB Now. At present, BB Now offers 10,000 SKUs and aims to increase this number to between 25,000 and 30,000.

Talking to ET, BigBasket co-founders Hari Vipul Parekh and Menon said that in coming weeks, the company will shift its focus solely on quick commerce business. Company’s BB Now will lead this shift, the report added. Founded in 2011, BigBasket went through several changes to arrive at perfect working model of grocery delivery.
