The Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI), representing major digital platforms including Zomato, Swiggy, Ola, Uber, and Rapido, has sought a two-month extension from the Karnataka government to submit details of their vehicle fleets.

The request follows a recent Karnataka High Court order that directed the suspension of bike taxi operations by mid-May and ordered the state government to draft a regulatory framework for bike taxi services.

In a letter to NV Prasad, secretary of the department of transport, IAMAI stressed the need for industry consultation in framing the policy. The association highlighted the growing need for bike taxis in urban transportation and their role in supporting livelihoods of gig workers.

“Bike taxis have become an integral part of the public transportation ecosystem,” IAMAI said, adding lakhs of rides were ordered in Bengaluru alone. The service offer a cost-effective commuting option in congested cities and provide income opportunities to thousands of riders.
