Reliance Jio has installed over 10 lakh 5G cells across all 22 circles of India, deploying a cell every 10 seconds, chairman Akash Ambani said while addressing the India Mobile Congress 2023 on October 27, highlighting the fast rollout of 5G technology in the country.
Ambani said that Reliance Jio alone contributed to 85 percent of the overall 5G capacity in the country and provided one of the fastest 5G internet speeds in the world. Jio's 5G rollout was powered by a 100 percent in-house 5G stack designed, developed and manufactured entirely by Indian talent, Ambani said.
"We have fortified our 5G infrastructure with services like JioFiber and JioAirFiber, our fixed-wireless broadband offerings. Now, Jio can provide 5G access to over 200 million unconnected homes and premises, making India the broadband capital of the world" he said.
This is Akash Ambani's first major solo appearance in a marquee telecom and technology forum. India Mobile Congress is jointly organised by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI).
Ambani said India ranked amongst the top three 5G-enabled nations, with over 125 million 5G users. "The transformative power of 5G will provide new employment and entrepreneurial opportunities to millions of Indians," the 32-year-old said.
Reliance Jio, the telecom arm of oil-to-retail conglomerate Reliance Industries Ltd, recently announced the launch of JioBharat, an internet-enabled 4G smartphone at a price of Rs 999, which is lower than most 2G phones.
The smartphone is targeted at nearly 250 million people in India who are still using 2G-enabled feature phones. It will support UPI payments through JioPay, have access to JioCinema for movies, videos and sports entertainment, and JioSaavn service which includes more than 8 crore songs in multiple languages.
"With such bold initiatives, Jio is set to end the digital exclusion in India once and for all" Ambani said. "Through the power of technology and connectivity, we will unite and inspire 1.4 billion Indians with the single dream of making our beloved Motherland Bharat the most prosperous, the most technologically advanced, the most inclusive and most harmonious nation in the world."
"We promise you that through the power of technology, we will build a digital statue of unity. This too will be the tallest in aspiration and achievement," Ambani said, referring to the Statue of Unity
Standing at 182 metres, the Statute of Unity in Gujarat's Kevadia is the world’s tallest and a tribute to Vallabhbhai Patel, the country’s first deputy prime minister and home minister of independent India credited with unifying the country.
