What is the Fastag annual pass
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has introduced a new Fastag annual pass for private vehicles, jeeps, and vans. For a price of ₹3,000, users have the option of taking 200 toll-free trips or getting validity of one year, whichever is shorter. Once the quota is used up, the Fastag reverts to normal toll rates, offering a dependable option for frequent highway travellers.
Eligibility for the scheme
To purchase the annual pass, the vehicle must have an existing Fastag registered against its registration number and cannot be blacklisted. The pass is for non-commercial private vehicles such as cars and vans. Vehicles with Fastags registered on the basis of only a chassis number need to update the tag with the correct registration number before applying. Commercial vehicles, buses, and trucks are prohibited.
How to activate the pass
The activation process is simple and can be accessed through the Rajmarg Yatra app or NHAI website. The applicant will have to log in, ensure eligibility, and pay ₹3,000 using UPI, debit/credit card, or net banking. Once verified, the pass will be activated within 2 to 24 hours and an SMS alert to the user will be sent. The payment should not be done using the wallet balance.
Benefits for frequent commuters
Annual pass prevents frequent toll payments at individual plazas, streamlining and making trips predictable for regular travelers. It regulates the expense by capping toll expenditure at ₹3,000 on 200 trips. Long-distance highway drivers, regular family travelers between cities, and frequent day-to-day commuters are facilitated by it. Pass also reduces waiting time at toll plazas by simplifying transactions, saving time as well as fuel.
Shortcomings of the scheme
Despite being popular, the pass is limited in use. It can be utilized on National Highways and Expressways managed by NHAI but not on state highways or local route-run roads. The pass cannot be transferred, is vehicle-bound for which it is issued, and must be renewed upon reaching the number of trips or validity. There are no periodic tolls for additional journeys for motorists who make more than 200 trips before the year ends.
