Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL), which manages Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), announced on April 15 plans for the temporary closure of the primary runway 09/27 and the secondary runway 14/32 on May 9. This closure is part of MIAL's monsoon contingency strategy.
A Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) has been issued to alert aviation stakeholders about the temporary closure and its operational implications. All flight operations are expected to resume as usual post 5 pm on May 9, according to a press release.
This yearly practice is part of CSMIA's contingency plan to maintain operational continuity and ensure passenger safety.
The maintenance work, carried out by engineering specialists and airside teams, includes inspecting runway surfaces for wear and tear and strengthening the airside strip.
Runway 09-27, measuring 3448m x 60m, and runway 14-32, spanning 2871m x 45m, are vital components of Mumbai Airport's infrastructure. Maintenance activities aim to address concerns such as waterlogging and ensure safe landings and take-offs during monsoon.
The runway maintenance work, planned in collaboration with airlines and aviation authorities, aims to minimize inconvenience to passengers. Airlines were intimated about the closure six months in advance to facilitate planning of flight schedules.
