Mehli Mistry has stepped down from the Mumbai-based Small Animal Hospital Trust, which runs India’s largest tertiary care hospital for pets of the same name founded by former Tata Group chairman Ratan Tata, emails reviewed by Moneycontrol show.
The resignation from the hospital trust follows Mistry’s ouster in October from the Tata Group’s main trusts — Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and the Sir Ratan Tata Trust — the two key entities that together hold a majority stake in Tata Sons.
His reappointment was opposed by trustees Noel Tata, Vijay Singh and Venkat Srinivasan, signalling the end of his tenure in the Trusts.

In his email to the Small Animal Hospital Trust, Mistry said that since he is no longer associated with the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and the Sir Ratan Tata Trust, he is no longer in a position to fund the Small Animal Hospital.
“I would also not like to request funding from a trust I am no longer associated with and therefore I tender my resignation with immediate effect,” he wrote.
Mistry proposed that the position of the Trust chairperson be given to Siddharth Sharma, CEO of the Trust, or any other person nominated by the board.
“Siddharth, being the CEO of the Trust would be most suitable to arrange the funding from one of the larger Tata Trusts by virtue of his position,” he wrote.
Another member of the board of Small Animal Hospital, Dr Anirudh Kohli, has also stepped down from his position following Mistry’s resignation, emails reviewed by Moneycontrol show.
Pet care hospital founded by Ratan Tata
The hospital, in Mumbai’s Mahalaxmi area, which provides advanced medical care to pets, was founded by Ratan Tata, who while seeking care for his beloved pet, encountered firsthand the challenges in accessing advanced veterinary treatment in India.
Small Animal Hospital is among India’s most advanced veterinary hospitals, dedicated exclusively to dogs and cats. Spread across 98,000 square feet, its facilities bring together international expertise, cutting-edge diagnostics, and over 14 specialities, under one roof and available 24x7.
The hospital’s specialities cover areas such as ophthalmology, oncology, dental care, cardiology, orthopaedic surgery, internal medicine, infection control, blood transfusion, and soft tissue surgery.
