Global mkts gain post Egypt President Mubarak resigns

The Nasdaq Composite was up 19 points or 0.68% at 2,809; it went up 1.5% for week and up 5.9% YTD. The S&P 500 Index rose 7 points or 0.55% at 1,329; it was up 1.4% for week and, up 5.7% YTD.

Global markets gained post Egypt President Mubarak resigned. The us markets posted 10th weekly gain in 11 weeks.

Market Vectors Egyptian ETF ended up 4.5% on Friday (was up 7% during the day).

The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 44 points or 0.36% at 12,273; it was up 1.5% for week and up 6% year-to-date (YTD).

The Nasdaq Composite was up 19 points or 0.68% at 2,809; it went up 1.5% for week and up 5.9% YTD. The S&P 500 Index rose 7 points or 0.55% at 1,329; it was up 1.4% for week and, up 5.7% YTD.

US Advancing Sectors: Financial gained 1.4%, Consumer Discretionary went up 1% and Industrial rose 0.7%.

European markets ended higher: CAC was up 0.15%, DAX up 0.42% and FTSE up 0.71%.

Peripheral European markets: Argentona MerVal rallied 1.35%, Hungary Index up 1.3% and Irish Overall Index was up 1.2%.

CBOE VIX fell 2.5% at 15.7 on Friday; it was down 1.5% for week and down 11.6% YTD.

Asian markets opened in the green; Kospi wqas up 1%, Strait Times up 0.76%, Nikkei up 0.66% and Taiwan up 0.5%. SGX Nifty went up 0.5%.

Europe Update

Egypt President Mubarak resigned post 30-years and handed over control of the country to the military.

US Economic News

Preliminary consumer sentiment reading for February came in at 75.1 versus 74.2 in January, highest level in eight months.

Global M&S

Nokia fell 14% after disappointing set of results.

Currencies

Dollar Index was up 0.2% at 3-week high on Friday. It went up 0.5% for week.

Dollar rose 50 vps versus Euro at 1.352

Yen went up 14 bps versus USD at 83.23

Commodities

CRB Commodity Index fell 0.6%.

Crude Oil was down 1.4% at USD 85.55/barrel

Natural gas lost 1.9% at USD 3.91 per MMbtu

Gold went down 0.4% at USD 1357.2/ounce

Silver declined 0.1% at USD 30.5/ounce.

Baltic Dry Index was up 3.7%.

Data to watch

Monday: NY Fed Pres speaks

Tuesday: Retail sales, Empire state mfg survey, import & export prices, business inventories, housing market index, Geithner testifies before US House, Earnings from Barclays, Dell

Wednesday: Weekly mortgage apps, housing starts, PPI, industrial production, oil inventories, FOMC minutes; Earnings from Comcast, CBS, NetApp and Nvidia

Thursday: Weekly jobless claims, CPI, leading indicators,; Earnings from Barrick Gold, AngloGold and Nordstrom

Friday: Earnings from Campbell Soup
